Who is Magic Sparkes, REALLY?
Doug "Magic" Sparkes has a passion for creating wonder and connection. After growing up in Federal Way, Washington, he hoped to break into the entertainment industry. He went to college and earned a degree in Speech, Telecommunications, and Film. Despite all of this, life after college had other plans. Following college, what he believed would be a summer job turned into a 37-year corporate career with a major NW company. His desire to perform, however, never waned or faded. In 1998, Doug found mentors in the magic community and slowly began his journey as a professional magician.
For many years, he tried to balance corporate life with his passion, but in 2021, too much had changed. In 2017, he was diagnosed with cancer. In 2019, his second sister died. A year later, his brother passed. A month later, a grandson was born prematurely and was in the NICU for six weeks. Around this same time, a niece was diagnosed with life-threatening health issues, and his last sibling was diagnosed with brain cancer. These personal challenges became a line in the sand. They were a turning point for Doug. Today, he clearly sees the value each day brings. No one is guaranteed a tomorrow. As he likes to say, "Our dreams will never come true until we take action and make them happen."
After his last sibling passed in 2021, Doug quit his job (called it early retirement) and formally began his dream of being a professional entertainer. Today, Doug Magic-Sparkes is fully living out his dream, bringing laughter, amazement, and healing through his lighthearted comedy magic performances. In his own words, "My life is rich and fulfilling. I perform magic because it helps me connect with others. Magic is healing. Magic is real medicine."
